Internationally renowned for its know-how in precious metal processing and coin production,
Münze Österreich is a global player in the international minting industry and ranks among the world’s leading mints.
With more than 825 years of coin-making experience, since 1988 Münze Österreich has operated as a private company and is the sole manufacturer of coinage to the Austrian people. This we still do at our handsome home right in the centre of Vienna. The majestic building occupies one of the most prestigious locations in the Austrian capital and, historic though it may be, behind its classic façade lies our state-of-the-art production plant. Here, centuries of craftsmanship and tradition combine with some of the world’s leading coin-making technology, much of it developed and innovated by our very own numismatic experts.
Owned in its entirety by the Austrian National Bank, Münze Österreich employs more than 200 people and produces some 450 million coins a year.
As well as striking some of the world best-selling bullion coins and an impressive range of collector coins and medals, we supply circulation coins and blanks to many countries worldwide. But first and foremost our duty is to produce the Republic of Austria’s euro circulation coins.

THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC – A SUCCESS STORY
Mankind’s fascination with gold began a very long time ago. For some 7,000 years, gold has stood for value and elegance. Since 1989 Münze Österreich has been producing the Vienna Philharmonic, Europe’s only bullion coin. We are extremely proud of the fact that people all over the world enjoy the coin and the sense of security it gives them.
The Vienna Philharmonic is considered a superb investment on every continent and precious metal aficionados appreciate the very highest standards of purity and sustainability applied during its manufacture. This is how we have created a gold coin of lasting value. Centuries of experience, responsible production methods and our passion for coin making are behind our
success. The result: much more than gold.

INCOMPARABLE COLOUR PLAY
Niobium is a very rare metal. It is naturally grey in colour, but a special process developed by Münze Österreich can turn it into something bright and colourful. The wonderful colours are not created by the application of colour, but by the targeted refraction of light on a wafer-thin, transparent oxidelayer on the niobium.
The unique appearance and beauty of our Silver Niobium coins is a major factor in their success. Another is that their two-tone niobium core and silver outer ring are the ideal environment in which to explore fascinating contemporary themes, including Renewable Energy (2010), Anthropocene (2018), Artificial Intelligence (2019), Big Data (2020), Smart Mobility (2021) and Extraterrestrial Life (2022). The 2023 coin, Global Heating, highlights the urgent issue of global temperature increase and our duty to limit it.
