New Coins 2021

This year there are three new series to look forward to, each with an inspiring theme and unique design.

EYES OF THE WORLD

20-Euro Silver Coin Series

This series introduces five exceptional animals, each one embodying a special characteristic for which it was praised in the myths and tales of previous cultures. The coins manage to create intimate eye-to-eye contact with wonderful creatures such as the snake, owl, elephant, tiger and bear. The eyes of the five animals featured in the series are resplendent on the reverse of the five different coins, each in its own shade of sublime Swarovski® crystal.

THE COIN

A first for Münze Österreich, this enhances the animals’ already mythical quality. The first coin in the series features the Rainbow Serpent, considered by Aboriginal Australians to be the creator of the world. Invisible to the human eye, this snake also stands for creative development.

COLLECTOR CASE

Made of elegant, lacquered wood, the Eyes of the World collector case consists of a protective slipcase and a storage box, both featuring a stylised eye in the centre that hints enticingly at what lies inside. As well as space for the five superb silver coins in the Eyes of the World series, under the decorative coin tray there is room to store the coin certificates.

Continent by continent, the coins not only pay homage to the exceptional animals that were praised in the myths of previous cultures, but also take us on a fascinating journey through human history.

THE UNCHARTED UNIVERSE

20-Euro Silver Coin Series

It has been a real pleasure to see how much our unusual and extravagantly designed coins, such as the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing and the Centenary of the Salzburg Festival, have been appreciated by you. The forthcoming series, The Uncharted Universe, takes this design element into account and goes a step further in the shape of three unique coins for you to collect, the likes of which have never previously existed.

We humans are fascinated by the vastness of the universe and the more we learn about it, the more fascinated we become. With the help of these coins and what you will learn about the universe along the way, you will reach the final frontier. Together with experts, we take a close look at three physical-astronomical phenomena – the Milky Way, black holes and neutron stars.

THE COIN

Curved in a similar way to our home galaxy, the Milky Way coin is S-shaped, not unlike a wave. But that is just the start of this amazing journey. The infinitely large is condensed into three coins, opening up a new horizon beyond which we can reach out to galaxies that no human has ever seen before.

COLLECTOR CASE

The universe in the living room. The cassette is black inside and out, as if looking high up into the night sky: this way, the astronomical phenomena on the coins are shown off to particularly good effect.

The lid is attached with magnets and is completely removable. The inlay can be opened, so the collection box quickly becomes a compact little exhibition about the universe, and the viewer can explore the coins from both sides.

Infinite expanses: concentrated in this collection box.

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

10-Euro Coin Series

On the one hand, this seven-piece coin series presents flowers of incomparable beauty (the silver Proof quality version comes complete with colour application); on the other hand, based on historical sources, the series serves as an illustrative lexicon of the language of flowers. It was at the beginning of the 18th century that English aristocrat Lady Mary Wortley Montagu wrote in her letters from Constantinople of “communication with the help of flowers”, having come across an elaborate system of meanings in the Middle East. In France in 1819, Charlotte de Latour published the book, Le Langage des Fleurs, based on Lady Mary’s writings. Over the course of the 19th century, the book was repeatedly reissued and the language of flowers became an important means of non-verbal communication. Get to know this secret language of love and gallantry, just in case words alone no longer suffice.

The messages conveyed by the flowers are inspirational, so too is the technology used to bring nature to life on the coins. Opening with the rose, the series continues with the dandelion, marigold, forget-me-not, chamomile, peony and violet until autumn 2024. The silver coins are available in Proof quality, featuring colour printing and a protective case, and in Special Uncirculated, which comes in a blister pack. The coins are also available in copper.
